Hazel

Hi, my name is Hazel. I am one of the one women in eight who will have breast cancer in their lifetime. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June of 2015 and before the end of that year had had a mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy, at St John’s Hospital in Livingston, and then radiotherapy at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre at the Western General Hospital.
Throughout my treatment and recovery I had support from a number of cancer charities, including support that I didn’t even know I needed, from a small local charity. Sadly, this charity has now closed and I decided that I didn’t want women, and men, going through what I did, without that little bit of extra help and support.
So together with my family and friends, we have started ‘Breast Friends and Family’. We want to provide patients with the little things that the NHS are not in a position to, things that make a difference to each individual and to how they feel about themselves. We also want to be able to do something for the families of those diagnosed with breast cancer, something to help the children and husbands or wives deal with what their family is going through and help the family as a whole, stay whole.
